Arsene Wenger has moved clear of Aston Villa legend George Ramsay as the most successful manager in FA Cup history after Arsenal defeated Chelsea in a pulsating final at Wembley.

Aaron Ramsey’s goal 11 minutes from time was enough to see off hot favourites Chelsea and deny the Blues a historic league and cup double.

It means the Frenchman has now lifted the famous old trophy on seven occasions, one more than Villa’s decorated Scottish boss.

“I’m very proud because you see what kind of fight you need when you want to win one,” Wenger told the BBC.

“You have to go through all the rounds.

“I’m proud for having done two things that have not been done before.

“To win the championship without losing a game and to win seven FA Cups.

“It’s not easy, believe me.”

Wenger’s record-breaking seventh cup comes 19 years after his first.

Ramsay clinched his first FA Cup with Villa in 1887 and his last with the claret and blues in 1920.

The Gunners are the most successful team in FA Cup history having won the trophy 13 times.

Villa, runners-up to Arsenal two years ago, sit joint fourth on the all-time list, alongside Liverpool and Chelsea, with seven wins.
